This is a comprehensive explanation and exploration into the history and story of the Hyde creepypasta, and its impact on the fandom. Made by deftonesdog021. enjoy ^^

THE BEGGINGING:

Earliest refrences to this pasta began on April 28th, 2007. Making it one of the earliest creepypastas, and the first to get popular. Although, there are some connections to less of a pasta and more of a mythos. Starting in around 2001, chat fourm topics came up on a cryptid matching similar features to Hyde's many designs. Though this could simply be what inspired the original 2007 pasta. Speaking of which, is now considered lost media. The version of Hyde you see in most media is based off of the pasta "Hyde; what is it and what does it want?" and/or "In the flesh." These two versions of the character have many differing features in both design and stories.

MYTH/CRYPTID HYDE (GRANITE BEES):

The first pasta mentioned in the previous paragraph was the first instance (at least that we know) of Hyde in this form of media. It describes Hyde as something similar to a monster or superstitious creature. "Hyde is said to live in the forest. Not just one forest, but all of them simultaneously. It's said that if encountered, it manipulates your woods into being its own. " and other similar aspects make Hyde out to be a stalker of the night. Besides the original pasta, the thing that popualrized this version was the YouTube series "Granite Bees" made by John Gabe and Robert Lanyan in 2009. Granite Bees was a horror series made independantly by the two, who were only 16 at the time of making it. This version viewed Hyde also under the name "DIRECTOR." and had it's own lore that expanded beyond the Hyde mythos. Hyde had the ability to control other people and make them go insane. These people were called "proxies" by the community and included the likes of characters such as Suity and Facey.

NORMAL/CREEPYPASTA HYDE:

The original version of his other apparence was in October 2011, and has since grown nearly as popular as the Granite Bees version. Although less scary, this version of Hyde has many adoring fans and many infamousies. The most thing people critisize is that he was a product of his time. With characters like Jeff The Killer, SONIC.EXE, etc, it was obvious that Hyde was a concoction of the many troupes and traits of other pasta characters. This worked in its favor though, even going so far as this version Hyde's fans fighting with the fans of the Granite Bees version as to what was the TRUE depiction of Hyde. This hyde also came with a backstory, which was made in early 2012 by scarywench829, which reads as follows. "Hydes backstory is a dark one. Although a monster, he never means to do any of it. Hes controlled and forced to do bad things because of that he is a werewolf. When he was younger, he got bullied a lot in highschool. Two of these bullies went so far as to stage Hyde (who used to be named Jay Jekyll) into being attacked by wolves. The meaner one, Marcy, tricked him into going in a secret room behind the school theater. The nicer bully, Lacey, tried to say stop but it didnt work. Marcy was too mean to stop. When Jay Jekyll went in, he got attacked and bitten by werewolf. And then at the hospital, the doctors gave him the wrong formula, making him go crazy and insane. He seeked revenge on Marcy, and a while after killed her by eating her. Now he roams the lands and eats and kills whoever gets on his bad side."

INFAMOUS STORIES

In the midst of Hydes popularity came some mystery to it though. In July of 2012 there were posts dotted around the internet saying that Hyde was real. This isnt out of the ordinary, people lie on the inernet all the time. But the way they described an encounter were all the same or similar. One even recalls a string of murders that happend in real life, and tried to connect them to Hyde. One post reads "I've been doing research on where Hyde comes from and it's abilities. Lately, I have found instances of people describing or even having powers similar to Hyde. This was before Hyde came out so this isn't a fan girl thing either. They say people like that are "avatars" and are aligned with some higher powers. Is this true?" Natrually, this was debunked by the community as people found this post ridicolous. Thankfuly, the original poster of that deleted it and themselves from the internet.

CONCLUSION

All in the past, Hyde was an icon in early online horror. Although with the rise of cringe culture, he faded into semi obscurity like many other creepypastas. However, due to nostalgia being a trend many people have come back to loving this character in both of its forms. And like me, many new fans have surfaced. In conclusion, Hyde was and is a phenomanom that has scared and will scare generations to come.
