It's Just There

In the van, listening to the iPod, sitting and slouching with friends. We were all in our 20s, and this was supposed to be an ordinary college vacation. Now it turned into a complete mess.

We were traveling in the unused but traffic-free road at the woods but then our van suddenly shut off by itself, my iPod shut down, our radio shut down, too. We were crashing and screeching abruptly. During the crash, I was flown out of the van into the open, silent road. The van hit a tree.

Then suddenly, I saw two bright headlights approaching me. The last sound I heard was, "Annie!"

Boom.

After regaining consciousness, I tried to keep track into what had happened earlier. We were coming home from a night bar (it was pretty far, actually). The main road was under construction. It was 1:30 in the morning. I took out my phone, but unfortunately it was crushed to bits in my pocket because of the impact. There was nothing I could do but explore the area and look for my friends. I tried to remember what the teachers taught me at Science class. They say the North Star guides you.

During the ride, I spotted the North Star and found out we were heading west. Hopefully, I had a compass. But the compass was going crazy. It pointed to all directions so quickly, but it finally settled pointing at me. I didn't know what that mean, but since it pointed south, which is behind me, I took a look at my back. I saw nothing but darkness. But then, a bright white light floods my eyes. My ears were ringing. Then all was black again.

I was dazed and dazzled by what had happened, but suddenly a small, white figure appears right in front of me in a split second. I was so terrified I ran and ran and ran, away from that mysterious phenomenon. I ran west. Finally, I found another road, and found my friends shortly thereafter. Most of them were wounded.

We were 11 all in all. 5 were wounded. It's just me, and another of my 5 friends. My other, unwounded friend, decided to stay near the van to treat my wounded friends. We decided to go and look for shelter, leaving our injured friends and coming back for them later, once we found help.

There's four of us. The oldest is Mike, topping at around six feet tall, and then Sarah, Ben, and me. Hopefully Ben has a LED flashlight, and Sarah had some marshmallows survived. We were headed to our supposed cabin, about a kilometer from us.

We noticed right in front of us there was a cliff. Not so very deep, just about 30 feet. But it's enough to break our legs. We also noticed the cliff once had a bridge, but it's broken. Blown to rubble by some explosion, I guess. We found a very muddy passageway at the side of the cliff. We decided to take it. As we were walking, we asked Sarah for some crackers.

There was no reply.

"Sarah? Sarah? Where are you?"

Then we heard a slightly muffled scream and mud splashing.

We still can't see Sarah, but we saw a hand under us.

"Quicksand! Quick, grab her and pull her!"

We tried pulling Sarah so hard, but then the ground started to rumble. We were shook off and down we fell into the cliff.

Hopefully, we were saved by the water. It turned out there was a river below. We swam to the shore and rested ourselves. We woke up at around 2:40. Then suddenly Ben burst out

"BULLSHIT! FRICKING CRAP! I can't believe it... oh God... I frickin' can't believe this... this ain't real... THIS AIN'T REAL! Look, Sarah's dead, we're lost, we got nothing but our clothes! My f-"

"Ben, calm down. Chillax. We're gonna find our way to the cabin. We can avenge Sarah's death. When people die, they go to another world anyway. Let's-"

"NO! We will never make it back! We will never survive! NEVER!"

Right at that moment we saw a knife impale Ben.

We ran and ran and ran again. Terrified again. Shocked again. Full of dread. We were living our nightmares. It was raining, and I can't see through the fog. Yet another white flash happened.

"Whoa, I think I just saw some... white thing. That was crazy, and it looked so... creepy. It's like it's gonna pounce on us at any moment." Mike said.

We walked and walked and walked. There were no signs of life. Just trees and grass and the occasional clicking grasshopper. It was already 4:00 in the morning.

"Oh God, help us... I'm so tired, I swallowed some mud, I injured my foot, and a rock was stuck in my arm. Oh gosh... aaarrrggghhh..."

The ground rumbled again. A tree fell on Mike and it immobilized him. He was stuck. He said in his last words,

"Ohfffgggghh... go on... without me... go... find the cabin, help our friends... aaffgghhh..."

Then suddenly a sharp branch impaled him.

I was so shocked. I screamed. I ran again. I was so scared. I couldn't see anything. I tripped, fell on a rock so hard, but I got back up and ran again. Soon enough, I hit some wood. It was smooth wood. Like the wood in a cabin.

"The Cabin!"

I found the door and sat on the steps.

"Finally! I made it!"

I never hesitated to enter the cabin, but once I entered the door, I saw some white figure.

It turned around, and it walked slowly. I closed my eyes, never daring to open it again. After a while, I opened my eyes and saw a white figure right in front of my face.
