Mallak the Everlost

Have you ever heard the story about a young boy named Mallak? Allow me. You see, Mallak was a young humble boy who lived in the south and spent a portion of his days working on his fathers farm as a simple farmhand. But Mallak was a bright young boy and also a curious one. He often found himself reading a book more than tending to the herd of sheep that moped around the farmland all day.

One Day while mallak was at the library he found himself lost in a section filled with odd books. He stared at the bind of each book where the title was appropriately placed until he stopped dead in his tracks. There he saw a black book with a red eye scrawled across the bind. Being the curious person that he was, he cautiously took the book from the shelve and flipped it open.

It was a story book. Almost like the Brothers Grimm, just not as many happy endings. Mallak flipped and flipped until he came to one last story. "The Forest of the Everlost". this title intrigued Mallak and he could not wait to read this eerie story that had flooded his mind with questions. He proceeded to check the book out.

The librarian had a stern look on his face. "What's wrong?" sounded Mallak in his cautious young voice."This book doesn't seem to checkout in the records kid. Oh well someone must have left it here. Tell ya what, Mallak, keep it," said the librarian in an authoritative but assuring voice. Mallak's face lit up with glee and shouted a quick, "Thanks mister!" before sprinting out the door. He was as eager as a dog is for its next meal.

When Mallak returned home he had supper which was the usual porridge for the family could not afford very much else. After supper Mallak sat down on his bed and opened his new book. He flipped open the book to find that every single story that was once there before had disappeared except for the story, "The Forest of the Everlost". This did not bother Mallak because he had not much cared for the other stories and it was a free book after all. So Mallak proceeded to read the story.

It mentioned a forest deep in the south that housed unfathomable secrets and about a farmboy too curious for his own good who went off in the night in search to discover them all. Now if you were Mallak you probably would think, "wow this is eerily similar to my life maybe i should put this book down." But no, not Mallak. Mallak became further interested and almost addicted to the story and eventually set out to find the forest himself. He set out with a light burlap knapsack containing a few apples from the small apple tree on the farm, the book itself, a wool coat and his trusty pocket knife that his father had given to him (which had probably costed him half a years pay). Mallak kissed his mother and his father while they slept and set out,He was determined to find the forest.

He treaded on deep into a clearing that resounded beyond the farmland till he came to a treeline. He had some trepidation but his curiosity poked him to carry on. So he proceeded. Leaves and branches crunched under his steps. He was truly afraid but the thoughts of finding a fairy forest or a ancient dwarf kingdom plagued his head. He carried on until....crack.....crack.....crack. He turned around quick and screamed at what he saw. A black mass had formed but quickly dismissed itself into the surrounding wood. Mallak quickly regretted his action and decided to attempt to navigate his way home. But Mallak was young and forgetful. He didn't want to admit it, but he was lost. If anything, he had driven himself further away from home trying to find it. He grew sick to his stomach and found himself sitting in a dugout part of a tree crying himself to sleep. When he awoke he felt odd, like a dark presence was looming over him. He felt anew. He quickly dismissed the feeling and re-summoned the mindset - "I need to get home and set out again into the everlost forest looking for home."
