Metal Sonic
Most of the Sonic fans know Metal Sonic as "Sonic's first successful metallic clone created by Dr. Robotnik", as he attempted to do this two times before, one being Silver Sonic, in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and Mecha Sonic in Sonic 3 & Knuckles, none of them succeeded at being as fast and agile as Sonic himself.
But then, in Sonic CD, for the Sega CD, Dr. Robotnik manages to create Metal Sonic, the perfect copy of Sonic the Hedgehog, one who can match the blue blur's speed and fight against him one-on-one.
However, the question is:
"How did Dr. Robotnik create Metal Sonic?"
It is never explained how could he create a robot that could run at the speed of sound and be just as agile as Sonic.
The answer is kinda simple, Sonic CD had a story evolving time traveling, and every level has a Bad Future that you need to turn into Good Future or you won't get the good ending to the game, the fact is that Sonic CD's bad future turned "bad" because Dr. Robotnik traveled through time, arrived at the future and somehow defeated Sonic the Hedgehog once and for all, and not only this, but managed to capture Sonic and finally robotize him in order to create Metal Sonic, the perfect Sonic clone that could achieve the speed of sound.
Metal Sonic is no one but Sonic himself, except he is now just a mindless robot following Dr. Robotnik's orders and capturing the animals he once saved from the evil scientist.
And in Sonic CD, Sonic must turn the Bad Future into good again by destroying the Badnik Generators Robotnik scattered around in the past, because changing the past could affect the present as well, and if Sonic left those generators there, his world would turn into a polluted mess out of nowhere, also, he needs to rescue Amy Rose, who was kidnapped by Metal Sonic.
Metal Sonic kidnapped Amy Rose because she was Future Sonic's love interest, and at the moment he looked at Amy, his "mind" started to tilt and he ran to get her and take her away from Sonic, who he thinks it's a fake hedgehog. Metal Sonic kidnapped Amy, but he just wanted to be with her, even though she was afraid of him and wanted him to get away, so he decided that the only way he can be with her is to defeat his fake, Sonic, and prove to Amy that he is the real Sonic the Hedgehog.
But then, Metal Sonic gets defeated by Sonic, as he just watches Sonic taking Amy away from him, he starts to recover part of his former mind, and now enraged, Metal Sonic gets focused on only one goal: Defeat Sonic and prove he is the real Sonic the Hedgehog.
Not only that, but he now sees Dr. Robotnik as an enemy, just as he saw back when he wasn't a robot, later he imprisoned Dr. Robotnik in the events of Sonic Heroes and challenged Sonic one more time, being defeated once again, and the story goes on, Metal Sonic still seeks to defeat his clone, not resting for one minute, and put an end to all of this...
