Metroid 64

I got a N64 a while ago. I only had one game, Majora's mask. I wanted some other games so I asked my parents for some for Christmas. On Christmas I got a few games. Paper Mario, Banjo Kazooie, etc. but one stood out. Metroid 64. I knew there weren't any Metroid games on the 64. I knew it was either a hack or a beta game. Either one sounded interesting. They put the prime trilogy in the same package. They said the clerk gave it to them for free when they bought Metroid 64.

I decided to play them in what would be chronological order. Or, what it would be. I popped the game in. I decided to watch the intro cutscene. It showed some random areas. A swamp, volcano, ocean, etc. it also showed some bosses. Ridley the queen Metroid, a lava snake. My hopes were already pretty high.

The title screen showed a Metroid next to Samus. I was a little confused by the fact they weren't fighting but whatever. The game started with a cutscene. Samus landed in her ship. Then a Metroid came in out of nowhere. Samus aimed at it. But then the Metroid flew around her. (Sniffing?) The Metroid began to screech. The game translated.

"Mama?" Then the queen walked up.

"What are you doing with that human Kyrux."

The queen said, "She has taken care of our cousin."

Kyrux said, "You are not my son." The cutscene made me sad, but I realized I had a pet Metroid. I thought these two mechanics would be very interesting.

The first level started. It was a basic tutorial. A to jump. B to fire. Arrows to switch beams. Z to morph ball. R to missile. It felt similar to LOZ. At the end of the level another cutscene started. The Metroid began to speak. "Welcome to my planet, Valhalla." I immediately recognized the name from one of the prime games. I had always wondered what it was like before the pirate attacks. I thought this game would be very interesting.

Nothing too important happened in the game except, as time went on Kyrux seemed to get more and more... sinister. As I neared the end of the game I got to the boss fight against Ridley. In the preceding cutscene Ridley attacked Kyrux. I immediately knew something was horribly wrong. Samus attacked Ridley and he said "You fool, that is not a normal Metroid." This was really confusing. "That Metroid will be your demise." After that the fight started. It was your basic Ridley fight in the first phase. Then the second phase started. Ridley talked a lot in this phase. "You don't know what that Metroid is capable of. Metroids are sensitive to more than just cold." He said a lot of cryptic messages. At the end of the fight Kyrux latched onto Ridley's head and drained his life away. As this happened Ridley clawed at Kyrux trying to remove him. He eventually fell limp to the ground, dead.

During the next level Kyrux spoke,"Whats wrong, I thought you hated him. He's better off dead anyways." I was very frightened by this. At the end of the level was what I presumed to be the final boss. The queen. The queen spoke even more cryptic messages.

"You don't know what Kyrux is capable of. You don't even know how to care for a Metroid."

At the end of the fight, Kyrux killed his own mother. Samus was visibly shocked. Kyrux spoke "What? She said it herself. I am no longer her son." I was really creeped out by this.

After this cutscene Samus flew to what looked like the bottle ship from Fusion. There some scientists talked to Samus about a knew material they had discovered. "We call it Phazon" I knew immediately what would happen next. He took out a syringe and injected Kyrux. Kyrux began to screech. The game did not translate this, and honestly, I was glad it didn't. Kyrux then turned into the Metroid prime. "You, Samus. You let them do this to me." Samus was horrified at this sight. I realized that this was the final boss. As the fight progressed Kyrux killed scientists and used them as ammo.

At the end of the fight, Kyrux said. "First you act as if you were my friend. Then you let them turn me into... THIS. And then you try to kill me! If I cannot destroy you. I will destroy everything else." He then started to wreck the ship causing it to crash into the planet. Samus barely escaped. Then the credits stared to roll. The music in the background was a sinister version of the Super Metroid theme. I found the game interesting and thought that this was a good plot-line in the Metroid series.

The Link

After beating Metroid 64 I decided to play Prime trilogy. When I opened the box I found a cord that looked like it would hook into the GameCube ports on the Wii and the controller ports on the 64. When I started the game it prompted me to hook up Metroid 64. I did so and it still played fairly normal. When I got to Meta Ridley in the first game he said, "You. It's your fault all this happened. If you would of let me kill that Metroid none of this would've happened."

Also every time I fought the prime or dark Samus It would say things like, "You betrayed me."; "Why do you hate me." etc.

When I beat Aurora Unit 313 at the end of the game. The prime came out and began to speak. "You have tried to kill me so many times. Why do you want me dead." Samus spoke.

"I find the universe more important than an old friend Kyrux." Kyrux then became infuriated.

"You Liar! I! Will! Murder! You!" At the end of the fight Kyrux spoke.

"You hate me because of what you let them turn me into. You make no sense at all"

"I had no say in that. As soon as I saw it happening I tried to save you, but it was too late."

"LIES!" He rushed at me but then died. I found this sad, scary, and oddly rewarding all at once.

Conclusion

Unlike most writers I was not traumatized or anything like that. I actually found this to be a great story. Even for Metroid standards. It explained why Samus was brooding so much in Other M. Because it happened twice. I also felt some pride in Samus for being able to still fight on after all of that.
