Minecraft Steve

Minecraft Steve. A name that is instantly recognizable, a name that has become a worldwide phenomenon. For those of us who are more familiar with the game than we should be (and I'm not ashamed to admit that there's a fair bit of me in this category), it was also a name that I had never thought about before hearing it spoken by someone else. And yet, when I heard it from my friend Michael, the first thing that popped into my mind was 'Minecraft Steve.'

I'd been watching Mike play for maybe half an hour or so, and he was just making his way through some kind of cave system where all kinds of things were trying to kill him. The monsters weren't anything particularly special; they looked like skeletons made out of various materials and wore armor. They didn't really do much besides attack you with whatever weapon they happened to have equipped at the time. What got me though was how utterly bizarre everything seemed in this world. It wasn't simply the fact that he was fighting skeletons of all different kinds. It was also the fact that these places were mostly empty, as if no one had ever set foot there before. There were pieces of wood, rocks, and other natural objects scattered here and there, but most of the area was covered by a layer of dirt over which he could build up walls to protect himself. That was strange enough on its own, but then there was the fact that the world itself felt very large. Just wandering around and looking at the scenery was fascinating enough, but Mike insisted that it was impossible to see everything. He said that even after playing for six hours straight, he still hadn't seen everything the game had to offer. When I asked him what exactly it was that he had seen, he told me that he couldn't describe it because it was unlike any other video game he'd played before.

The strangest part was that despite the vastness of the world, the whole area was practically devoid of people.
