Mother 3
Mother 3 is one of my top favorite role playing games. Two months ago, I started to remember how much I loved the game. Even though it was a Japan release only, I started searching for some cartridges on the internet. To my surprise I found a cheap copy of it; $12.00, and in the description of the product, it said it was English. I knew not to trust these things, because someone could of hacked it. But my curiosity got the best of me, I paid for it and the purchase was complete.
About a week after I purchased it, the game arrived. And at the time, I was home alone. It came in a Nintendo DS case. The DS case had no cover, all it had was an adhesive tag that was crookedly placed that said "Mother 3". I opened the case up and the cartridge sticker was missing. Nothing was on the cartridge at all. I took the cartridge out of the case and stuck it into my Gameboy Advance. I turned my Gameboy on, everything was normal until it was loading the game... nothing happened, it was a black screen. I thought if I waited it might of eventually start working. I sat in my bed, waiting for it to start which felt like hours. It wasn't starting at all. I turned my Gameboy off and took a short nap.
When I woke up, I was still home alone, just me and my Gameboy. I turned it on keeping my fingers crossed, and it started up! And it was English! It did the same health and safety warning, Nintendo logo, and all that bit. When I got to the Title screen, there was no music. The title music could of been affected by the translation, and I didn't worry. I started a new game and was naming the characters, the only odd thing was that music was distorted and reversed. And when I chose the "Don't care" names, Lucas's was "D", Claus's was "E", Flint's was "A", Hinawa's was "T", and Boney's was "H". What horrified me at that time was all of those letters put together spell "DEATH" And for some reason, I could not name my favorite food, favorite thing, and choose the text speed and window color, it just skipped all of that.
I didn't see the "Welcome to the world of MOTHER 3" cut-scene, all that I did see was a black screen, I sat there for 5 minutes, and the game started running again, I started out as Lucas, he had his older aged sprites and I noticed I was in this room I've never seen before, There was no music, all you could hear is wind, I was surrounded by a forever grassland and Boney was sitting down by my side, he whimpered every time I'd try speaking to him and I had no clue why, I wanted to help him, but I didn't know what to do.
I checked my inventory to see if I have anything but it was empty, then I checked my stats. my HP was 0/0 which freaked me out, and my PP was 0/0 too. And all my other stats where 0 as well, I exited out of the stats and back to the game. I started running forward and started to get goosebumps. I came to a point where I could hear Boney's whimper again, but this wasn't any ordinary Boney whimper. The whimper was looping and louder than a Gameboy could handle, and it was also very distorted. I tried turning it down but it was useless, it would only get louder. I ran back thinking that the loud noise would stop looping and it didn't. I came back to Boney trying to speak to him but nothing happened, and for some reason, out of nowhere, I couldn't move.
After waiting a few seconds Boney got behind me as if he was to join my party, and it didn't say "Boney joined your party!" either, I could now walk again, so I started walking south until something horrifying blocked my way. It was Claus, but not regular Claus. He was in a staticy box. His hair was bloody and frizzy, his face was dark blue, covered in blood, and his eyes where empty, crying out blood. his clothes where shredded and covered in blood stains. I spoke to him, and he said "Lucas, help" along with a "Yes" or "No" option. I got more scared because I remembered my name was "D" at the start of the game, But I was too horrified and thought something scary would happen if I picked "Yes", so I chose "No". Then, he just said "...". And I couldn't exit the dialogue.
I turned off the game, petrified. I never wanted to play it again. But I got the urge to play it one last time to see what happened... I turned my Gameboy back on and saw that my save file said "GO BACK", I was scared half to death what I just read, I loaded the save and a terrifying picture appeared. It was a detailed image of Lucas's whole family hanged with blood and gore. Near the bottom of the image, a bloody font caption says "GAME OVER" I cried softly and didn't want to go any further in the game. I got slightly mad. I mean, who could do such a thing to a child's game? Was this a joke? I got more angry, I pulled the cartridge out of the Gameboy, went outside and threw it on the concrete. With the rest of my rage, I smashed the cartridge to pieces with a hammer. I was glad that it was all over with, but I never wanted to play Mother 3 anymore after that happened...
