Same Old Story

Hello, my name is William Frost. I'm 18 years old. I've been trying to make sense of some strange things that have been happening to me recently.

Over the years, I've developed a routine that I end up following, without realising it.

I'll have a glass of cold water before I brush my teeth in the morning. I'll warm some milk in a bowl before pouring it in my cereal. I'll eat my cereal in front of the TV, flicking through the channels before settling on the news, every morning.

I'll drink three mugs of coffee throughout the day, at equal intervals. Roughly some time after lunch, I'll go up to my room and doodle aimlessly for a while, sometimes in bed and sometimes on my desk. After I do this, I'll watch TV on some days. On others, I'll read.

Before going to sleep at night, I'll fold the clothes I wore earlier and put them under my pillow. I'll put my phone and laptop on charge by the foot of my bed, and I'll turn all the lights off in my room bar a small lamp by my bed.

One morning I woke up, and as usual, I went to unplug my phone – checking for any calls or messages at the same time, before pocketing it and going to the bathroom. Oddly enough, my phone was gone, along with the charger. I was confused at first but I thought my mother had come into my room to tidy up while I was asleep and unplugged it for me. While she was at it, she must've tidied my laptop away too because I couldn't find that either. It took about fifteen minutes of searching to finally find both my phone, my laptop and their respective chargers, but what was strange was that they were in the boxes they came in when I bought them a year ago. Again, I assumed it was my mother's doing, and carried on with my routine. The glass I drank from was nowhere to be found so I had to get one from the kitchen. My toothpaste was still there but my toothbrush was missing. I found it sure enough, in one of the cabinets. I went downstairs to the kitchen and opened the fridge. That's funny, I thought. Mum never forgets to buy milk. Huh, guess it's toast for me today. Also, the TV remote probably ran out of battery, because that wasn't working either.

When the time came for my first mug of coffee of the day, I was surprised to find the coffee jar empty. The jar next to it was full of teabags, but I was the only one in the family that didn't drink tea. This was getting weird, and fast. Forgetting about lunch, I went straight up to my room. I thought some doodling would take my mind off the bizarre day I was having so far. The only problem was, I couldn't find my sketchbook. Usually I keep it on my desk but I found it in a box, along with some other books. There was a label on the box but it was faded and I couldn't make out the words. Must be time for spring cleaning, I thought.

I headed back downstairs towards the TV, before stopping to remind myself that the remote no longer worked. I'll read then, I told myself. I sat down in my favourite chair and reached for the book I always kept on the coffee table. There was nothing there. What was I reading last? Ah yes, Atonement. I looked around for it but I couldn't find it. Across from me, where my mother sits, I found a book propped open. I glanced over at the front cover. Earthbound Spirits: A Study.
