The patient, 24 year old J.S., was brought in after a suspected overdose of fentanyl at a traffic stop. Police only barely saved him; he came frighteningly close to death. He laid comatose for roughly five days.

When he woke up, he refused to speak; he wouldn't answer questions, he wouldn't follow directions, but he at least seemed to hear us and acknowledge our existence. We performed several tests on him, and everything seemed fine... until they weren't.

The next day, I visited his room to give him his daily checkup, when I noticed that his chin had no skin or muscle covering it. Bone. It wasn't like that yesterday, but I thought that maybe I wasn't paying enough attention. Something else that concerned me was that some of his hair had fallen out, and was on his pillow. He still wouldn't say anything, but he also seemed concerned about what was happening.

Then, the day after that, I again was given the task of giving him a checkup. When I got there, all of the skin on his lower jaw was gone, and he lost even more hair. He could speak this time, but all he could mutter was a faint "...ready?"

Then, for several weeks, nothing was asked of me. Nothing whatsoever. Nobody called me. Just nothing. Yet I still received my paychecks. There came a point where I had no idea why I was there. I heard nothing about J.S., so I thought he had either fully recovered already... or something bad happened.

But then, when I turned up to work one day, nobody was there. It weirded me out, cause it was an actual workday. I was on time and stuff, too. I waited a couple of hours, but no one else came in. Since I was alone, I decided I was going to check if J.S. was still there.

I slowly opened the door and looked in, and my worst fears were true. He was dead. His entire head was completely devoid of skin and hair at this point. His mouth was wide open.

I shut the door. I understood everything... or so I thought. Only a few minutes later, I heard him bang on the door.

I reluctantly opened it, and to my horror, he was alive, but something was very wrong.

"Ready?"
