Why do people like remasters?

Most of them aren't that interesting. They're literally just an old game, but they only made the graphics higher quality. I never understood why people liked them. However, I'm not sure I can ever view them the same way again after my experience...

It was March of 2024. I was playing random Sonic games as a Sonic fan does, but eventually I got an email from a strange person. Their username was nothing but gibberish. However, the email itself looked interesting. I read it.

"Congratulations!

You have won a free beta copy of Sonic X Shadow Generations! Please click the download link at the bottom of this email to download your copy! Enjoy playing!"

It seemed extremely sketchy, but on the other hand...It was Sonic. I, the naive teenager I was, clicked that link. Big mistake...

Sure enough, it started downloading a file called "SONICXSHADOWGEN.zip". I was excited at the time. I thought that it could have actually been a good remaster. I wish I could have cancelled the download sooner. The file was approximately 3.5 gigabytes. When it finally installed, I opened it and saw three files.

"1SONIC.exe"
"2X.exe"
"3SHADOW.exe"

I thought that the numbers were telling me what order I should play the files in. I opened "SONIC.exe".

1 - SONIC.exe

It opened on the SEGA logo, but the sound was slowed down, and I could see hyper-realistic stains of blood on the logo. After that, it cut to the title. Sonic and Classic Sonic never appeared on it until I pressed start. For a split second, I saw Classic Sonic and Sonic on the title, but they had bleeding black eyes with red pupils. It cut to black for 10 seconds. A cutscene started. Classic Tails was walking through Green Hill Zone. He said "Today's going to be a good day!" It was not, in fact, a good day. Not at all...

I then went through the Green Hill Zone stage easily. I had played it multiple times before, so I knew what to expect. However, everything changed when I saw a dead flicky on the floor.

Near the end of the stage, the corpse of a flicky was laying on the ground near the goal. Classic Tails' expression changed to fear as he saw this. The flicky's blood was rather hyper-realistic. After touching the goal, I was taken to a new level, only titled "HILL ACT 2".

There were no obstacles, no gaps, no badniks, nothing. Just a bunch of dead animals on the ground and trees. A reversed theme was playing. Classic Tails looked horrified. Hyper-realistic blood was everywhere. I walked for about 2 minutes before the music stopped and the animals were no longer in the path. At the end of the stage was Classic Sonic. Classic Tails continued to walk towards Classic Sonic. He then turned to look at Classic Tails, and he had black bleeding eyes with red pupils. He was smiling menacingly. The screen cut to black. White text appeared.

"HELLO, DO YOU WANT TO PLAY A LITTLE GAME???"

I was taken to a new level called "HIDE". It appeared to take place in Hydrocity Zone Act 1. At the very end of the level, Classic Sonic laughed and then began chasing me with the drowning theme playing. When he touched Classic Tails, he grabbed him by the neck. His grip slowly became tighter until Classic Tails' neck broke. The screen cut to black and white text appeared again, with Classic Sonic laughing.

"THE KNUCKLEHEAD IS YOURS"

After that, it showed the corpses of Classic Tails and Modern Tails. There was very hyper-realistic blood coming out of their mouths. A pentagram was on their stomachs, and they were also bleeding. After 10 seconds, the game closed itself. I assumed that I was now supposed to open "X.exe". I could have stopped there, but I didn't. If only I could rewind time...

2 - X.exe

This one also began with the SEGA logo, but it was slightly redder, and there was a bit of hyper-realistic blood on it. The sound was distorted. When it went to the title, Knuckles was now in the emblem instead of Sonic. The title read "SONIC THE GOD". The title theme was a distorted mess, with the "SEGA" sound from the first file playing sometimes. I pressed start. It cut to black for 5 seconds. After this, it showed another cutscene. Knuckles was low-poly and he was in some kind of mansion. "Where am I?" He said in a text-to-speech voice. It then became some kind of first person horror game. I went to the door. White text appeared reading "This needs the master key". I'm not really going to go into detail about what was in that section, there was a lot of personal stuff, and it was just a long series of finding keys. Eventually I found the master key. Upon unlocking the exit, I was in a room filled with mirrors. Menacing music started to play. One mirror had Modern Sonic, but he had black bleeding eyes with red pupils. Upon punching this mirror, Sonic went to another mirror. I was punching mirrors for 30 seconds before Knuckles fell on the ground. Sonic teleported in front of him and then stomped on his head. After five seconds of a black screen, white text appeared.

"ONE SACRIFICE REMAINS"

After five seconds it showed Knuckles' corpse. His head was smashed. There was tons of hyper-realistic blood. After five seconds, the game closed itself again. There was only one file left: "SHADOW.exe". I opened it. This was the worst, and last, mistake I had ever made.

3 - SHADOW.exe

The SEGA logo once again appeared, but this time I could hear another voice with the distorted sound. I could make out the word: "USELESS". The SEGA logo was now red and bleeding. There was no title, just Shadow in a black void. There was strange music playing. Shadow then walked through the void himself. I didn't press anything. As he walked, text passed by.

"Isn't this fun, Jason?"

The game knew my NAME?!

"Altering timelines...Creating puppets..."

"It's an amazing activity."

"However, the game is not over yet."

"One sacrifice remains."

After the last one, Shadow was now in a spaceship-like level similar to the ARK from Sonic Adventure 2. Shadow passed by several corpses of GUN soldiers. At the end, Maria's corpse laid on the ground. Shadow began crying, but it didn't sound like acting. It actually sounded like his voice actor was depressed. After 20 seconds of him crying, he ran offscreen. It cut to black for 10 seconds. When it cut back, Shadow was electrocuted by several wires. He was bleeding hyper-realistic blood. On the wall next to him, there were words written in blood that read:

"WE ARE GODS!"

After 10 seconds, it cut to black and the game over theme played. My PC then shut itself off and wouldn't turn back on. I took a moment to process this. Ten seconds later, I heard two voices. "Don't tell anybody about this, Jason". I turned around, and there were two Sonic plushies with bleeding eyes on my bed.

I did what anyone would do in this situation.

Scream.

You're next.
