The Dead Soldier

It's been said that outside a certain French village, on just the right day of autumn, you might see the past come alive. In Old Pierre's potato field, you might see a dip in the ground. If you were to dig deep enough, when Pierre's at the market of course, you might find a rusted mess tin. Open it, and you might find a broken locket, a rotting picture of the girl back home still in the frame.

By now you might be wondering why the ground is shaking, and who is this man demanding you to pick up your weapon. Put the locket back in the tin, Private, and follow his directions. You've known him since childhood, and if there's anyone who will get you home alive, it's Sergeant Ted Wilkins of Kingsport, Massachusetts. He kept you alive back in the Old Man's House, he won't let you die here. He's climbing the rampart; I think you should follow him.

Fix bayonets and over the top! Move, move!

One foot at a time, there you go, left, right, left, right, left, right, right—No!

Get up and keep running! Left, right, left, right, left—You're nearly at the forest, the krauts are in there, somewhere. Keep your eye on Ted, he'll see you through. What's that-?

They're all over the place! Shoot, reload, shoot, JAMMED! Bash Fritz's brains out with the butt of the gun!

Ok, keep going, work the bolt, get the bullet out, watch Ted, stab Reinhardt, got that gun fixed? Shoot, reload, shoot, reload, shoot-

Get on the ground!

Whiiiizzzzzz

BOOM!

Post Mortem Report

The body was discovered in the woods by a hiker. The flesh has entirely rotted away, leaving only moldy green bones. A simple dating test shows that the body may be as old as the First World War. An American trench did go through a nearby potato field, however, it's unlikely that it could have lain unmolested for almost a hundred years, as it was only a few feet from a well-travelled path. It's quite possible that it was stolen from a cemetery, or perhaps dug up by an unknown party in the potato field, which features a newly dug hole.

What's really odd, though, is that it's skeletal hand was discovered clutching a wallet, containing an American Driver's License last renewed in 2011!
