The Diddy Kong Racing Incident
Okay so this is quite odd and nothing like this has ever happened while playing a legit game. So uh... yeah. So this all started a couple of weeks back, I was going to play one of my favourite games from the Nintendo 64. Which is Diddy Kong Racing, so I went to download a ROM for it since i had downloaded an emulator to play; the emulator being Project 64. But I couldn't find any working ROMS (which by the way REALLY annoyed me), so I asked my dad to borrow his N64 since he had one.
Gladly he let me borrow it... Except he couldn't find the game... Thanks dad. Since I didn't know anyone who owned or ever heard of the game, I looked on eBay. I saw a DKR cartridge for 2 British Pounds... I also happen to live in Britain. The cartridge didn't seem at all damaged, there may have been a scratch or two on the label but apart from that, it was spotless. So I bought it.
Within two days it arrived, I was actually excited to be able to play the original game without computer glitches... Or so I thought. So I loaded the game up and saw a save file called Kaz... Weird name man... They clearly completed the game with 47 golden balloons, I would have loaded it just to race Wizpig (the boss... He's a massive pig... Literally), but I just wanted to start from scratch. I made my new file called Cad and then entered the game.
So in this case as normal the intro played, except when Taj (the elephant genie... I know, what the hell) gives his speech, thunder and lightning strikes. A massive bolt hit Taj, and he disappeared. Then I was also struck (I was playing Pipsy... Don't judge me). I somehow ended up on what looked like a heli-pad without the big H. I was also inside a plane (which was one of the vehicles you could use).
I would've flown, but there was only the pad. All else that surrounded me were dark purple clouds, the exact ones you'd find at the second race against Wizpig. At this point I was confused and suspected that the cartridge was hacked. But I was quite surprised that the game didn't glitch at all. Normally there would be distortion in textures or fonts etc. I wasn't quite sure what to do, I could've flown I guess. But where to? Somehow the dark purple clouds started to mentally scare me, so I reset the console.
When it booted back up, somehow it completely skipped the intro (which would have played due to not saving the game) and dived straight into the game. Weirdly I was back to the same place that I was before. That pad surrounded by dark purple clouds.
Despite my fear of the surroundings, I started to fly straight forward... I honestly don't know why I did, and to be honest I don't what scared me more. The fact that everything was silent, or them dark purple clouds. I was still flying after about a minute until I heard the sound of Wizpig's trademark laugh, at that point a text bar came up saying Well lookie here, it's the little worm!. Which is the speech Wizpig gives at the start of the second battle. Out of nowhere thunder and lightning started up again, and another bolt hit me.
This time I spun down and seemed to teleport to Timber's Island (the place where you start at the beginning of the game), but as soon as I got there, the Wizpig head started laughing and it's mouth opened (which is what happens if you collect all Wizpig tokens). This surprised me a little since I didn't have any! I decided to fly in and when i got there everything seemed normal.
The cutscene played as it should then the race started... Except a text box came up saying If you lose, you'll regret it..., which is text that never shows up in the game. I'm not superstitious, but it felt like it was personally talking to me! Despite that I kept playing (I know... Stupid idea), I've been playing this game for years of my life, and I've never know Wizpig so fast! Of course with that I lost... And the chilling You losemusic played, and the screen went black. And at the last minute I heard Wizpig laugh...
But it just went back to the main menu. Weirdly there were no save files at all! From then, the game played normally. No thunder and lightning, no dark purple clouds. Nothing... I still don't know what happened, I'm not even sure if the cartridge was hacked! Everything that happened just disappeared. But what did it mean when it said If you lose, you'll regret it...
