The Drawing

My daughter came home from school today and handed me a picture she drew in class! She's autistic, so I make sure to greet all of her endeavors with the utmost positivity. I kindly accepted the picture and gave her a big hug, she said "luvu dadu", kissed my cheek and ran outside to play on her swingset. I smiled watching her run off, content and happy with her life. After batting back a tear of happiness I turn my attention to the picture. It was a typical childs picture, there was a square house with a triangle roof, clouds, a yellow sun in the corner and people. There was me and her, or a tall stick-figure holding the hand of a small stick-figure, each with their own label above their heads "Lily" and "Thomas". We were standing to the right of the house. I put the picture onto the fridge with a Colorado Rockies magnet I got from the airport in Denver. I then opened the fridge to grab a beer, and shut the fridge. I took one last glance at the picture as I turned to walk to the sink. I had to look again, there was a stick figure who wasn't there before. Their head was visible from behind the other side of the house, they had a frown and the tilted "angry eyebrows" and above them was written mommy. My heart sank,

Lily's mom died during childbirth, and Lily knew nothing of her.

"AHHHHHHH DADU!!" Oh no, Lily. I ran outside to Lily who had screamed. She was lying on the ground holding her face, groaning. I ran to her and held her, "Lily, are you ok? What happened sweetie?" trying to be as calm and comforting as I could. She managed to say through her tears "There... was, a lady, looking, at me, from, the side, of the, house, I went, to say, hi, and, she, scratched, my face, and...and...Dadu, I'm, scared"

I picked her up, telling her its ok and ran inside. I laid her on the couch and ran back to the fridge. The angry figure was gone. I ripped the picture off the fridge and took it to the stove to burn it. I set it on a burner and turned the dial. The flame clicked on and started burning the picture from the edges inwards. I gave it one last look as flames engulfed the simple brown house, and I saw the face again. This time, it was showing again through the window in the house. "AHHHHHHHHHH DADU!!!"
