The Horrifying Find
I love games, mostly ones for the DS, I always loved browsing the aisles in GameStop, I usually went for fun platformers or shooter games, but something caught my eye one day..
It was a nature game! I really couldn't remember the name something like Nature Select or something, you could make habitats in the game, and have animals come visit and make a habitat of their own, or, if you didn't have enough resources for them to live off of they could feel free to leave, the object was to keep as many animals in the habitat as possible.... Sadly, I lost the game, I'm not sure if it was during the move, or while un-packing, but, I guess I'll never really know.
Anyway, one day, I decided to clean my room, knowing that a friend that I haven't seen in ages since the move was coming over for a visit, she had been there for me for ever, yet I was always the "clean" friend, and I was still worried about how other people though of how I lived. I started off with my closet.. what a mess.. I pulled out the cylinder shaped, barrel type container that I had to use back at the old place, when we lacked of space.. and money.
"Hey!" I said as I pulled out an old, label ripped cartridge.
I had no idea what it could be, but dropped what I was doing and darted for my DS.
I quickly grabbed the device and slid the cartridge in, it didn't work at first, which irritated me something fierce, but I tried again, this time when I pressed the power my DS quickly shut off, saying it was dead, so I grabbed my charger and plugged it in. it didn't seem to be dead, it had full battery, its as if my DS was trying to get me to not play the unknown game, the logo popped up, and my face was bright with excitement. It was the game! I clicked continue and went to my habitat I made in the swamp.
So beautiful. The screen was covered in fog though.. Hmm.. I didn't seem to care though, since I just kept playing, as soon as the fog cleared I noticed something... there were no signs of life anywhere, no animals.. nothing. At this point, I was confused, there was plenty of food, plenty of resources... plenty of everything..
I noticed one thing, though! some sort of animal in the far left corner of the screen, a deer?
Wait... its not moving... the deer was dead, just laying there.. just a limp body, this happens quite often, with animals dying and all, but it never shows the actual dead corpse, it usually just disappears, was this a glitch?
This game hasn't been used in 3 years, I guess it was. All of a sudden, after I ignored the corpse and was planting new bushes for future new-comers three boxes popped up on the side of the screen, they all said the same thing.
"A wolf has entered the environment! You may welcome with some fresh meat!"
What? The game never said ANYTHING like that before. Fresh meat? Before I had anytime to comprehend what the hell was going on another box popped up: "You've earned respect from the wolves!" and right before I could look another box popped up!:
"The deer has disappeared!"
I looked over only to notice, the wolfs had blood all over their face and the only remands of the deer was the puddle of blood which was now polluting the clean water, and the wolves just sat there as one more box popped up:
"The wolves are not satisfied, they are looking for YOU, do you think you taste good?"
At this point, I was too frightened and shut the game off.
I can still hear the sound of wolves howling outside sometimes, sometimes they sound closer than other times, it feels I can still hear the sound of pop ups from the game.
