The Lotus Garden

Nearly two years ago, I was looking for a game to buy on my new Wii.

I bought probably about eleven games. I do not remember all of them, but the ones that stood out in my mind the most were an early Super Mario Galaxy prototype, a finished Super Mario Galaxy that could not even work, and a strange game called "The Lotus Garden." It had a strange dark purple Japanese lotus on the box, with "The Lotus Garden" in a blurry font over top of the flower.

After I had furiously thrown out the broken Super Mario Galaxy disc, I decided to try out the Lotus Garden. The image on the disc was completely different from the image on the box. Instead of a lotus, I saw a white dog in front of a black, distorted sky. Unsure of what this game would be about, I put the disc into the slot and waited for the mystery to be solved.

When the title screen finally appeared, it had both the dog and the flower. Under this were the selections New Game, Open Saves, Options, and Language. I selected New Game, and I was introduced with a clip of a roaring purple wolf breaking through a black wall, as if it were giving the effect of it breaking through the screen.

Before the game actually started, it showed the story. I could not understant what it was showing; all that appeared were a group of characters speaking different languages.

Figuring that this was a glitch, I restarted the game.

It seemed my hunch was correct, since this time when the story came up, it was in English. Though it was not in proper English... as if the person who added this to the game did not speak it as their native language. However, it was still understandable. I read it out loud, properly, to myself.

"November 2nd, 1997. A ghastly creature is wandering in your small village, causing chaos across the lands. You must slay this evil entity or become its snack!"

I thought that sounded pretty cheesy. And because of that, I did not expect much from this game.

When the game actually began, I was playing as a citizen in traditional Japanese clothing. The game was a standard 3D platformer. The enemies you would face were humanoids with faces of deformed wolves. Your only means of fighting back was a golden sword with a wolf's snout shaped handle.

Level 1 was inside of the protagonist's house. There were many secrets in this level. I had found over fifteen secrets. The most obvious one can be done by killing the first enemy, standing on the platform he spawned from, and staying still for twenty seconds. This produced a slide show of images of all of the bosses of the game, except for the final boss. This was basically a hint on what you would be up against.

The last secret I found actually teleported me to the final boss.

It was a horrifying human, pitbull, and wolf hybrid that would burst out of a giant statue of a man. Its only attack was firing a beam of light at your character. Even though it could kill you in one shot, it travelled at an incredibly slow speed. You would have to be standing still for about five seconds to get hit.

However, somehow when the game lagged from so many beams being on the screen, I was hit.

My character dropped dead like a ragdoll, and quickly decayed. At this point, I found out that you only had one life. The Game Over screen faded in. Shortly after, it faded into a close-up image of the final boss stared into the screen with a displeased facial expression. Above it, there was a message.

"Bring me your mother..."

This somehow intimidated me. Without thinking, I called for my mom to come downstairs and I showed her the image. Her only response was a loud scream.

When I glanced over my shoulder to ask her what was wrong, she had vanished. Worried, I looked back at the screen. I was traumatized by what I saw.

It was a picture of my mother as the final boss creature, with an extremely unusual facial expression. Once again, there was a message over her head.

"Thank You."

That was when I noticed that my Wii had also vanished.

There was a note in its place.

"Thank you for generously in giving me your mother.

She had taken my place.

Because of you I have finally escaped this horrible prison."
