Travel Companions

So my cousin got married recently, and last night he told me a story about something really odd that happened to him and his wife while they were driving through the mountains. I believe he said the Rockies.

He said that they had been driving for some time, and decided to hit up a rest stop. As they pulled in they noticed this white beat up van all alone in the desolate parking lot. They headed in and his wife went into the restroom. He stood there for a few seconds and then seemingly out of no where, two strange guys walked up to him. He said, they looked, "off", like those people that not only live on the fringes of society, but do so for the wrong reasons, if you get what hes saying. The smaller one, whom he described as gangly, somewhat dirty wearing a nasty white tee and stained jeans, and just overall unpleasing, smiled and said "hey there, you from around here?". My cousin replied "no im from Lansing Michigan". They both exchanged small, grinning glances, "what a coincidance, so am i" the small one replied. "Weird, me too", the second responded, he was a little taller, just as greasy and strange looking. My cousin said he immediately became uncomfortable and just then his wife came out. "You know" said the smaller one, "we could be traveling companions"...."We have to go" he tells her, nudging her over to the car. The guys don't say anything, but as my cousin and his wife get closer to the car, i guess the guys started heading to their van.

So they were on the road. It was getting dark, but they figured they could reach their destinaition relatively soon. Just then they see headlights gaining on them fast. After some studying they both mutually realized that it was that shitty van from the rest stop. So he floors it, these are looooong windy roads, and i guess there isn't many officers out there. However this may have made things worse, because these guys kept right on gaining. The chase continued for about 10 minutes i guess, finally and to their shock, as they reached the city limits of their destination i guess the van slammed on its breaks, put it in reverse, and dipped outta there. They didn't see them again luckily. It's anyones guess what that was all about, or what he really meant by, "traveling companions", all he said was, "It's pretty lonely and desolate out there"...
