You Are Lying

My name is Tanner, although my last name isn't important. I'm just going to share with you a little story of mine. This happened on what I believe was a Saturday, when I was about nine years old.

My brother, like any other older sibling, was a complete and total asshole of a person. He would do everything a stereotypical big brother would do. He would hit me, embarrass me, break my stuff, and blame things on me, but this time he had gone too far.

We were walking through the woods behind my house with his friend, who was just as big of a douchebag as my brother, and I stopped to take a leak. They said they would wait for me, but the second I turned around, they bolted of in the opposite direction. I wasn't kidding about the asshole part, was I?

I got lost pretty quickly in those woods. I walked for hours until I noticed the sun was starting to set. Before I knew it, night had already fallen. I continued to walk through the seemingly endless sea of trees until I saw an ominous, orange torch-like glow. I had been staring at darkness for such a long time that I was instantly drawn to it.

I ran towards the light as I thought that I was close to civilization, and ran into a long, black, limb of what looked like a monster. I didn't know whether to be fascinated or terrified; the creature turned around and revealed its twisted, jack-o-lantern like face.

Smeared with blood, on the ground was a mutilated and dismembered human corpse swarming with flies. I sprinted as fast as I could, but the monster's glowing smile grew closer and closer.

It finally touched my shoulder and I had immediately froze. It held me in place with its long, black talons while a calm whisper uttered the words, "Are you afraid?" directly into my ear.

I said in a scared tone, "Yes, I am terrified!", hoping that it would let me go if I was compliant. When I finished the sentence, something heavy thumped the back of my head. I blacked out instantly, feeling certain that I would be killed by this monster.

Minutes or hours later, I woke up where I first saw the beast. The corpse was gone, there wasn't any blood, and the monsters face went from a twisted and evil smile to a playful grin. Baffled, I couldn't speak at all for a few seconds.

He said, "Home." and pointed left, then gently pushed me on the back in that direction. In about fifteen minutes or so, I was back home. When I exited the woods, the sun was peaking over the forest. My mother ran out almost as soon as I saw my house, hugging me firmly, and asked me where I had been. I explained the entire thing except for the monster, knowing she would never believe that. For some reason, she didn't notice the painful bruise on my head underneath my hair.

She said she hadn't seen my brother since he left last night, and his friend was screaming and talking about monsters. It sounded worrisome, but I was too tired to care. It wasn't that unlike my brother to not come home on time.

Later that week, I was in bed, I hadn't seen my brother since that one night. I looked over at the window, and written in blood were the words "He was lying."
