You May Need an Update
It's really hard to tell this story because I'm not exactly sure of dates and it has been a while since this incident happened so the sequential order of this story may need review in the future.
Anyway, my name is Eric, I've been a big fan of creepypastas about games for a long time now and never thought my mini-addiction would lead to me having to write one myself but you all needed to read this.
I was looking online for random haunted game roms, famous and obscure, I found things like Sonic.exe and the pokemon hacked roms but I always knew that these were remakes that fans had put together, I was looking for the real thing.
On one of my many afternoon's of searching I came across a game called ホラー. I quickly opened google translate and discovered the name was "Horror" in Japanese. This almost put me off downloading the game because of the language barrier and I really wish it had.
On opening the game I discovered it was a simple RPG in the style of the old Final Fantasy series (Pre-VII). Also it was in English which I assumed had been adjusted due to my system settings. This blew my mind as I love turn-based RPG's and scary games so I thought I was in for a treat. To my dismay there was nothing scary about the game. It was a simple "Find the Princess" story, that was until I tried to quit.
I went to the menu and hit the exit button but just as I was clicking my computer opened up a "Windows Update" window and got in the way. Automatically I told it to postpone and tried again to close the game, but the same thing happened. This time I chose to continue which brought up a text box saying "Good Choice". I thought that the programmer must have been clever enough to make the update window popup just to the right spot to stop the player from quitting each time.
So I did the obvious thing, opened up task manager and tried to end the process. I was met with the standard error bloop from windows everytime and this is when I started to get annoyed. I once again went back to the game only this time it said "Do not try that again." This was some pretty freaky stuff, but I knew that all of this was to do with programming.
I started playing the game again only this time three of the towns were empty with notes on the houses saying "Please stop quitting, just try harder." This I'll admit sent chill down my spine.
Once again collecting my sanity I resarted my computer. When it started back up my backround had been changed to a black screen with only the title "ホラー" left on it. The only shortcut available was for the game and none of my other programs would start. My head was racing. I decided against my better judgement to open the game and this time it was very different.
I started in the main characters house and it had a computer in the corner. I moved to the computer and activated it which started up a screen with some details about the computer. I noticed quickly that the computer was the same name and specs as my own computer and there was only one thing different. A comment saying "You might need some better hardware." Again I brushed off the feeling of dread and hit enter to see if there was anything else on the computer.
When I did it showed an 8-bit version of my facebook with rendered stills of my own pictures but with a status update I hadn't written. The update was "ホラー".
I wiped my computer after that and have never looked for the game again. But I'm sure it's still out there if you look hard enough.
