I Totally Forgot I Was Scarred for Life 12 years Ago

Before I start the real story, you should know a few things about me. My mom died literally yesterday. I'm not upset about it. I know what you are thinking—then why bring it up? Did I kill her? Was she abusive? It's because she left me her sweet fuckin' house, because no one else in the world loved her. It's such an awesome house. Now I don't have to rent a shitty apartment right out of college. My story isn't about that, I just wanted to brag.

Anyway, I was minding my own business, thinkin' about my sweet new dig and how lucky I am mom got offed by some drunk driver, when my old friend from middle school, Millie, called me up.

"What's up?" I said.

"Not much. Just bored. I was thinking about that time our best friend got killed by a mysterious ghost in the mountains."

That was best friend talk for, 'let's get drinks some time.'

But something about that call didn't seem right. It made me think of things. Things I almost remembered. Something weird had happened the last time we met. But what?

I crawled to bed that night, too tired to change my mom's old sheets. Even the comfort of my new house didn't shake the feeling that something was very wrong.

Oh right, there's something I have to tell you. Maybe I should have put it in the introduction. My town is surrounded by these dark ass demon mountains. These aren't your mom's mountains. These are the rockiest mountains that have ever been. And one of them has a train tunnel built into the side. Officially they say that the train was built in the early nineteen hundreds so goods could easily be transported to our town. Officially they say the tunnel is decommissioned because of "structural defects" due to "weathering and disrepair".

But we know the truth. It's a ghost tunnel. Hiding lost train conductor gold. Train conductors are pretty much land pirates. Lol, wouldn't it have been funny if mom had been hit by a train instead?

I remember I asked my mom about it once when I was a kid. "Mom, do you think the train tunnel in the mountain is a portal to hell?" "You ask me that every day. You know I have to finish this work before your Dad gets home. I don't want you going out to play down there. It's dangerous and old. That's why it's sealed off." "That's not an answer. Is it dangerous and old because it was built by aliens to house some kind of WMD that will destroy mankind?" "Sure, whatever. Please, go watch TV or something."

I KNEW it.

So, now that our train tunnel was 100% definitely haunted or something, me and Millie and some other chick who was our friend went to explore it. As we got closer to the tunnel I started feeling creeped out. I noticed that there was actually enough space in the boards nailed over the tunnel for us to fit. Shit, you think our city would do a better job of sealing off dangerous areas. I started thinking maybe I'd have to actually go into that place. I suddenly noticed that it was really, really quiet. So quiet that... like, you know when it's loud and you can't hear well? It was like that. Minus the loud.

Millie touched my hand and I freaked out. "WHOA WHOA WHOA."

"Dude, are we gonna go in the tunnel or what?" She asked, her voice strangely muffled by what I can only assume was a sinister, sentient silence intent on killing all of us.

When I didn't answer, she and the other chick took my hand and dragged me kicking and screaming (silently, duh) into the cave. After that I don't remember much. I think I saw a mysterious light that totally wasn't a flashlight. I think that other chick gave us a really scary look because she got possessed by the flashlight. I think Millie and I left our friend to her fate when we saw it, and ran out. I think I spend the last 8 years in therapy trying to get over abandoning her to death by trains. I don't think they ever found her body.

You know, it's really weird that I haven't thought about this since I left for college. Maybe I should sober up a bit. But not until after me and Millie get drinks tomorrow.
