I saw something on my computer screen

December 18, 2014. This day was the last day of our final exams. It was the last day of torture for the semester; the last day of school for the year.

Only having 16 units compared to the normal 26 to 29 units this semester, my schedule was pretty chill, giving me a lot of time for reviewing subjects. But nope! I spent most of my free time playing League, reading manga in our school library, sleeping in said school library, or staring at the school fountain. This unhealthy study habit most probably came from our school's grading system.

Getting an 89 in the preliminaries would automatically pass any subject even if you get 65 in the midterms and finals, given you don't drop the subject, piss the teacher, or fail to submit major requirements, like projects.

So, after getting several line-of-7 subjects and a couple of line-of-8 subjects in my preliminaries, I was pretty content and threw the midterms away. All my grades went down midterms. I did terrible in finals. My life was over.

Anyway, enough of my school. I'm here to tell you what I saw a few nights ago on my computer screen.

January 6, 2015. 11 PM. I was laying on my bed in my room on the second floor, and was about to enter the gates of dreams when I suddenly heard noise downstairs. Being alone the whole week, I was confused as to what the hell made that sound. Surely it wasn't the occasional cockroach or the rarer rat; it was something... definitely not an organic thing. I could tell that much from the floor-filtered noise that was coming from the living room just below my bedroom.

Irritated at the sudden pull of the noise from the land of dreams, I got out of bed to check what was causing the noise. A minute later, when I was a little more awake than when I was in my bed, a thought suddenly came. What if it was a burglar? What if it was a serial killer? What if it was... a ghost (A ghost is fine as long as it's a cute female ghost. I've always wanted a ghost girlfriend.)? I suddenly stopped walking noisily and started my quiet way towards the stairs.

The first floor has always been darker than night whenever the lights were turned off at night. Even the moonlight doesn't pierce the darkness of the floor. However, this night was different. As I turned the corner towards the living room, I noticed a faint glow from the Christmas tree that hasn't been taken down yet. I inched closer and strained my eyes to see what was making the glow. I then realized that the tree was just reflecting the light from another source... The family computer...

Confused, I walked towards the computer that showed nothing but static and white noise, I pressed the power button on the CPU since I figured I must have probably just forgotten to turn it off earlier. But as I reached towards the button, my finger just millimeters away from giving me back my land of dreams, I heard a whisper behind me. I didn't look for fear of seeing Linda Blair or another god-forsaken internet jumpscare face behind me. Instead, I brought my arms in front of me, then I suddenly struck the space behind me with my elbows, then I swung my right arm wildly behind me. When neither my elbows nor arm made contact with anything, I slowly turned, my heart pumping gallons of blood per second. There was nothing behind me.

Brushing the whisper as a sleep-deprived anomaly my mind was playing on me, I turned back to the computer to find it was now showing the desktop.

"What the fu-," I was cut off by my phone ringing in my pocket. The phone I remembered leaving on the table beside my bed. How was it now in my pocket? Did I unconsciously pocket it? Well, whatever. I got it and looked at the screen and saw Katya Lischina's eyes staring back at me. My wallpaper. Katya is so pretty-... No, wait. The cellphone. Right, I saw I received a new message. I slid my finger across Katya's pretty face, following my complicated pattern password. I checked the new message and saw a link, and under it was the word, "VISIT."

Being the stupid person I am, I opened Firefox on my computer and entered the link on the address bar.

The site loaded slowly, and every second that passed felt like a year. I held onto the swivel chair where I sat, bracing myself for a jumpscare. My mind started creating a "TIFU by visiting a random ghost website on a haunted computer" story I could post the next day on reddit. It wasn't a ghost site.

It was something more horrifying.

It was...

the school website.

I passed all my subjects. WTF.
