Letters to Dead People

Part of my personal grieving process is to send letters to those whom I looked up to in my life and it sort of gives me closure. There is one person, in particular, who I send a letter to every year around the time that he passed. He was a Scoutmaster for me when I was in the Boy Scouts, and also one of the only positive male role-models I ever had in my life. Here's the last letter that I sent him:

Mr V.,

I can't believe it's been another year already! Where has the time gone. I went fishing the other day. Caught some small-mouths in the canal. Thought of you. My kids are growing so fast. One's in kindergarten now, the other starts next year. They miss each other during the day, so it's rough on my wife. I figured it would be easier when the one went off to school but now the other one's acting out twice as much.

Nothing terribly interesting is happening at work. Well, I mean I just got promoted to Senior Application Developer, and now I'm in charge of managing and teaching students, I guess that's pretty big. What I actually do hasn't changed much, at least for now. We'll see what happens.

I was talking to Jason the other day, your son, and he said you really turned inward before you passed. Apparently you thought that you didn't really mean much to anybody. I can't believe that you ever thought that. Not for a second. While, yeah, I totally could have stopped in more or even just gave a phone call, you meant so much to me growing up. You are literally one of the main reasons that I am who I am today.

Anyway, I gotta get back to work now. I think about you a lot.

Sincerely,

James

Today, I received a letter in the mail from Mr. V's address....

Dear James,

Please stop sending us these letters. Mr. V. hasn't lived here for 7 years now, since he passed. You're scaring our 8 year old. He thinks there is a ghost in the house.

Kindly,

Mr. Smithfield
