Mega Man: Mega Edition

I am a huge Megaman fan. I love the classics and I thoroughly enjoy the X series. The classics are my favorite though, especially Mega Man 3. Though, I'm not here to vent about my feelings on Mega Man. I'm here to tell you about the experience I had with a weird PC game, with Mega Man involved.

Day 1

I was looking for some Mega Man roms the other day for my NES emulator and I saw a pop-up for a Mega Man game. Being a huge Megaman fan, I hit it. It took me to this link with a TON of games. I saw Sonic, Mario, Mega Man X but no Mega Man classic. I was feeling disheartened as the pop-up said it had Mega Man classic, or at least that's what I saw. I closed the link but I saw a window on the bottom of my screen. I opened it up and saw that Mega Man: Mega Edition.exe was downloading.

"Mega Man: Mega Edition, what's that?" I questioned myself. I opened up the file and was ecstatic about what I saw. It was all the robot masters from all the Mega Man games sporting 32-bit updates. It also had a thing right next to it that said "10 new robot masters!"

"10 new robot masters? Sweet!"

I decided I'd take on all the other robot masters before taking on the 10 new ones, as I thought the 10 new ones were from an unofficial Mega Man 11. I decided to tackle Bomb Man first as I wanted to start off this with an original and Bomb Man is who I start with in Mega Man 1. The level played normally up until the boss, this game also includes full out voice acting. Mega Man got through the boss door and a cutscene started. The dialogue exchange was a bit weird as Mega Man was saying "No don't do this. Stop it right now." I figured Mega Man was talking to Bomb man as Wily reprogrammed him in Mega Man 1 and as such Bomb Man was evil. I defeated Bomb Man,but Mega Man looked.... sad? This game really pays attention to detail if it was including that Mega Man was sad considering he knew Bomb Man for a while.

After this I took on Gutsman as he was weak to Hyper Bomb. I got to Gutsman and Mega Man said "Why are you doing this?" I shrugged it off as I thought he was speaking to Gutsman. I was getting a bit creeped out as I've seen Mega Man Powered Up and he tried convincing the robot masters to come back to his side. Again, I shrugged it off.

I beat the remaining robot masters of Mega Man 1. Mega Man only said "why?" but each time he sounded sadder and sadder. I figured I got far enough for the night and shut the computer off.

Day 2

I got up this morning and turned on the computer. I started the game and started fighting the Mega Man 2 robot masters. Mega Man continued saying "why?" whenever he got to a robot master. I started to question why he kept saying that especially because these were WILY'S robots. It started getting so bad that he just kept saying why through the whole stage.

"What are you doing this for!" I yelled at the laptop. I closed it and got ready for school.

School was an absolute nightmare today. All I was hearing was "why?" in Megaman's voice. I couldn't do anything in P.E as I had a headache due to this. I couldn't sing in choir, I couldn't think in math. I eventually asked to go to the office so I could go home. My head felt like it would explode! I got the OK to go home. I always walk home so I was walking home today, and I swear I saw a figure in a blue jogging suit across the street. I figured I was hallucinating as my head really hurt. Maybe I smacked it on something this morning? I don't know all I knew was that I needed to go home and get some sleep.

Sleep was definetely NOT what I needed. As soon as I fell asleep I was thrown into an awful pain as if I was exploding. I saw all the robot masters as I was in searing pain. They looked at me blankly standing unnaturally still. I called out for help, but they didn't move an inch. Then I heard a voice "why?" As soon as I heard this I woke up sweating, head killing me I crawled to the table desperate to get something to write on and write with. I finally gathered a pen and some paper. I wrote a note to my friend Josh saying,

Dear Josh,

I can't do this please take care of this game for me. I already took out 14 you need to do the rest. Please don't bring anyone else or else they'll suffer too. Josh I need you to do this for me, you're the one I trust the most to do this.

Day 3

Hi my name is Josh my friend Noah recently passed and I need to get to the bottom of this phenomonon. I recieved this note yesterday shortly after sixth hour. I was excused for the rest day so that I could go take care of this "buisiness" Noah wanted me to take care of. When I got to his house I saw him on the floor eyes wide open, lips pursed. It was sickening, my best friend laying there on the floor dead. I vowed to do this for him and not end up like him. I saw the laptop on the couch. I picked up and I opened it up. I saw Mega Man: Mega Edition.

"What's that?"I asked myself. I started the game and I was flaberghasted. All the robot masters. I saw Noah defeated Mega Man 1 and 2's robot masters. I started right away on 3's. I started with Needle Man, why? I don't know I just did. The stage played normally except for Mega Man saying "why?" I didn't get it. I got to Needle Man and Mega Man just said " Why are you doing this too?" Mega Man's favorite word seems to be why. I thought to my self. I saw that if Needle Man hit me with one needle and I died in one hit. "This will be hard" I thought. I got there again and Mega Man said "Haven't you learned?" I beat Needle Man this time and Mega Man started sniveling. "What am I playing?" I thought. I beat the rest of the robot masters from mega man 3 and 4. I had to close the laptop as I had developed a small headache. I set up the couch as a bed and I fell asleep.

I woke up with my headache healed. I opened up the laptop and started again. I started off by fighting Napalm Man from Mega Man five. This time the "why?" was echoing. It was ECHOING! "What is this game trying to say?" I thought. This is when I figure out I'm dealing with technology and am like "ha-durr, I can turn the volume down." So, I turned the volume down and guess what else I heard than a weird noise in the air like "no". "What's going on!" I yelled enraged. I sat down and finished Napalm Man's level and Mega Man had his usual "why?" response. This is what it was like for all the Mega Man 5 and 6 bosses. I had such a bad headache from all of my anger I sat down and fell asleep.

Sleep was not a good thing for me. I had this horrible sensation like I was blowing up. I sat on the metal floor, crying in pain. I looked up and saw every robot master Noah and I had beaten with.... Noah? They were all staring at me, not moving a muscle. "What's happening?" I said as I woke up.

I woke up with an unbearable pain. I got the pen Noah had and found my self a piece of paper. I wrote a note to our friend Melody saying

Dear Melody,

I'm sorry to go like Noah, but I must. I just want to let you know this and that you have to finish what we started. We defeated 46. You have to beat 42. I'll understand if you can't do it, not 'cause you're a girl but because we both failed and let's face it we're probably the two biggest nerds in the school when it comes to video games. Stay strong as you'll need your strength for this task. Good luck, I'll miss you as you'll probably miss me.

Day 4

Both of my best friends were found dead on Noah's floor. I'm beginning to think that his house is cursed. Hi I'm Melody friend of Josh and Noah. I got this note shortly after school and I rushed over to Noah's house. What I saw still scars me. Josh's body with a pen jabbed in his neck. Dried blood ran down his neck and formed a spot on the floor. Josh's eyes were wide open and his lips were pursed, as if trying to say something. Noah's mom was in the chair crying. She told me to take the laptop to my house. I did and then ran to my house tears streaming down my face. I opened up the laptop and saw it. Mega Man: Mega Edition.

I started on Slash Man from Mega Man 7 and heard Mega Man saying "why?" and it was echoing. "This is crazy! Why is it doing this? Is it the computer? or..." I was scared. I wanted to stop and start playing this when my parents got home but that wouldn't be until 5:30, another two hours. I couldn't do that though. I had to do this for Josh and Noah. I got to Slash Man and Mega Man said. "You idiots never learn, do you?" I felt like he was talking to me when he said it. I know it seems a little vain but that's what it felt like. I beat the Mega Man 7 and 8 robot masters. I got to Mega Man 9 and as soon as the stage started my head could barely comprehend what I was hearing. It was why but it was like it started then halfway through the word it started again. It keeped repeating and I was confused. I got to Galaxy Man and Mega Man said, "I'm getting sick of this," I beat Galaxy Man and Mega Man started bawling.

"What's this game's problem?" I questioned. Mega Man had the same response to the rest of Mega Man 9's bosses. With same stupid "why?" effect. I got to Mega Man 10 but I was tired so I took a nap.

I woke up with no problems whatsoever. The small headache I developed had gone away even. I started on the game again. I beat Mega Man 10's bosses with the same stuff from before except Mega Man was weeping harder than usual even though these weren't Dr. Light's creations. I saw a little cutscene.

"You've killed all of these robots, you cold-hearted monster. Well, there are 10 more for you to kill mercilessly. Let's go you brute." said Mega Man

I didn't know how to react to this. The game brought me to a new robot master select screen. It had 10 robot masters Soap Man, Mag Man, Sky Man, Earth Man, Thunder Man, Robot Man, Clock Man, Ball Man, Thief Man and Tree Man. This game had a built in weakness chart. It said to start with Clock Man, then Soap Man, then Thief Man, Robot Man, Tree Man, Ball Man, Mag Man, Thunder Man. Surprisingly enough there was no "why?".The next two were Sky Man and Earth Man. I went to Sky Man's stage and found out it was pretty peaceful. It had the music from Sunflower Fields from Mother 3. The level itself was pretty tame. It had a few enemies in the shape of cloud torpedoes, walking flowers and robo-chickens. I was running by and I saw Noah and Josh. They were relaxing in the background, talking, laying down. I started bawling when I saw this as it made me feel good they were in a better place after these events, after the excruciating pain they went through to beat this game. I was even more determined to beat this game now that I saw that. I beat Sky Man with Thunder Man's weapon, the Thunder Shot. I finally made it to Earth Man and his level terrified me. Excuse me for the language, but it looked like Hell! I saw a bunch of robots down here in the background with expressions of anguish and depression on their faces. I made it to Earth Man and he was pretty scary. He was overall a russet colored robot with a look of pure malice in his eyes. I beat him with Sky Dive and another boss battle with Wily started. Wily had a demon machine. It was a dark red with long claws. It had an open mouth with fangs. It was weak to Soap Board so I got that out and started jumping into him with it. I eventually defeated him and blacked out.

My dream was that I was in Sky Man's stage, with Josh and Noah. We had a conversation and I loved every second of it since I was able to communicate with my dead friends.

"You did good Melody. I didn't think you could do it," Josh told me.

"I did and it was awful i didn't like it at all. The stupid echoing 'why?' and ugh!" I said

"I had it the easiest as I had to play the game the least," Noah said

"Well the last 10 were pretty fun. I didn't have to deal with 'why' except for at the boss fight."I told them

"Melody thank you for everything we've put you through. We will never be able to thank you. As long as that game wasn't beaten we were tied to it. Now we can leave in peace." Josh said.

"Please don't leave! You don't have to! You can stay here so we can talk in my dreams! PLEASE!" I begged

"Melody we couldn't do that to you. You'd eventually go crazy that you couldn't actually talk to us. We have to move on." Noah said.

"Good bye forever Melody," Josh said, a tear trickling down his cheek.

"Good bye......guys" I choked out that last word. The last thing I wanted was to never talk to them again.

I woke up and the game was gone. I shut the laptop and saw my parents walk in the door. I ran up and hugged them as hard as I could. Knowing very well I was lucky to be alive.

I will never forget the game, Josh or Noah. But life must go on and so far it has. It's been 3 months since the incident and I felt like I needed to get it off my chest.
