My mom did something despicable

It was what I thought would be a normal day. I'd just come home from school - today was mother's day, so we made some colorful cards with markers and glue - and was working on my homework. We were to describe why we love our mother's and turn it in tomorrow for a completion grade.

So, I was writing on the printer paper with my colored pencil in the living room when I heard the front door creak open. "I'm home!" my mother called. I could hear some shuffling sounds before the soft thump of the door closing. I thought to myself, she must have a lot of bags. I should help her.

I put down my colored pencil and stood up, running to the door. My mom had grocery bags lining her arms, so I grabbed her work bag for her and dragged it into the kitchen. Once all of the bags were lined up on the counter, she patted my head. What a good mom. But what I didn't realize was that it wouldn't stay that way for long.

I went back to writing for my assignment as Mom put all the groceries away. I'd just about finished when she sighed to herself and said, "All done!" I heard her footsteps as she came around the corner. She walked around the coffee table and crouched in front of me. "Hey, sweetie, wanna see a magic trick?"

I nodded - of course! Maybe I'd get more than a quarter behind my ear? Maybe a dollar? I could do a lot with a dollar.

But it was different this time. She raised her hand in front of my face, her nails long, red, and sharp, like they'd been dipped in a bucket of red paint. Slowly, she placed two of her fingers in the middle and pulled.

I didn't feel anything at first. It must've been the shock that made me numb as she slowly, excruciatingly drew her fist away. Something was poking out of it, fleshy, the color of my skin. I could only watch in horror as she said mockingly, "Got your nose!"

I screamed, tears springing to my eyes, and did the only thing I could - run away, not heeding her calls for me. I could practically feel warm blood dripping down my face as I locked myself in the bathroom. All I could do was wait for Dad... he was my only chance.

But then I saw the door handle move. It went up and down, and I heard a scraping sound, as if...

And then the door swung open, my mother on the other side, lit up like an exhibit in the museum. She said something and grabbed me, walking down the hall as I struggled and putting me in her room. I didn't listen to her. I didn't want to listen to her.

She took my NOSE. I sniffled as she sighed and left, the sound weird and distorted because my NOSE was gone. Maybe when Dad got home he could get it back for me. For now, all I could do was lie on my side and cry.
