The Intercom

Part 1

I will never forget the day that I was paid a visit by something...something from another world.

I was sitting on my couch at about 3 pm. My parents were not at home and I was checking my email on my laptop. Now before I go on, I must mention that we had a system of wireless handsets that had an intercom function. When the phone rang, it made a normal phone noise (bingbingbingbingbingbingbing) but when the intercom rang, it was more like bringbring, bringbring. You could tell the difference if the person calling was within the house or outside of the house.

Anyway, I was writing an email to my best friend and the phone rang. Except it wasn't an outside call. It was the intercom tone. I quickly ran to the garage. I had expected this, but I was still terrified when I saw that there were no cars in it. Looking back, I should have ran out of the door right then.

Part 2

I really should have run out the door. My friend lives just down the street and I could have just called the police from there. But really, I don't think I could have run fast enough to escape the horror in my basement.

My first reaction was to go back and sit down on the coach, very silently. When I am scared, I always just don't move and stay very quiet. When I was a kid, that would be until my parents came up from the basement or whatever. But this time was different: I was 14 and my parents where still at work on a hot summer day. I was sitting there quietly when the intercom rang again. After 4 rings, I answered.

Before I go on, let me mention that I recently have started studying Chinese. The pronunciation for the number four is identical to that for the word "death." I wonder if that means anything.

Part 3

I wish that I had never picked up the phone. Thinking about it now there was still time to leave, to go outside and escape this nightmare.

When I answered the phone there was only silence at first. I waited and was about to hang up but then I heard something. The voice on the other end was really deep and scary like I had expected.

I need to mention before I go on that since I was a kid I have always loved riddles. I spent most of my time at home reading, even in the summer, and I was very good at them.

Anyway, back to the phone call. Whatever was in my house said "I'm coming for you," in Chinese. I was terrified. Maybe the 4 rings did mean something after all. I knew I had to find the voice before it found me. Shaking, I asked "Where are you?" There was a pause and then a reply. "I'm in a house inside of your house." A riddle.
