The Wind That Never Blew

Once, there was a young boy who had a father. There have been many young boys who had a father, but this is a story about just one of them. A very particular one.

The boy and his father did not have a great relationship. On his first birthday the boy had beaten his father at basketball, and when the boy spoke his first words six months later they were "you do not impress me." The father's resentment manifested itself in odd forms of behavior, such as lying to the boy about the names of common household objects and wearing a Jason mask at the dinner table each night. Both slept poorly and neither talked louder than a whisper, except when they would scream throughout the darkest part of the night.

They did not have a good relationship, but they did have a sailboat, and this was the one place where they smiled together.

They were smiling together the day when the shark came for them.

When the boy saw the shark he screamed "shark" but his father refused to look, because the boy screamed "shark" often. But this time was different. The shark was approaching quickly and the father would not look, and when he finally did he realized that they needed to move! But in order to move, they needed the wind, but that was the day of the wind that never blew. They screamed for the wind as their hearts raced and their skin grew tight and sweaty, but as the shark grew closer their memory of the wind grew more distant and for the first time they hugged as they both awaited their toothy fate in terror.

The wind that never blew continued not to blow.

Then, just as the shark was almost upon them, a totally different wind that did in fact blow came along and blew them away, and from that day on they never spoke about the hug, the shark, or the wind that never blew.
